Snow chains or snow socks: which is the right choice for winter?

Catene da neve o calze da neve: qual è la scelta giusta per l’inverno?

Umberto Ganino |

With winter approaching, equipping yourself with the right snow gear is essential for safe travel and compliance with the law. Among the most popular solutions are snow chains and snow socks , two devices with different functions, performance, and regulatory requirements.

This guide analyses the differences, advantages, disadvantages and, above all, what the Italian legislation currently in force provides.

What are snow chains and socks?

Snow chains

These are metal or composite devices mounted on tires to increase traction on snow and ice. They offer maximum effectiveness even in difficult conditions and are the most robust and reliable solution for mountainous terrain. The maximum speed allowed with snow chains mounted is generally 50 km/h.

Snow socks

Snow socks are high-grip technical fabric covers that are quickly applied to the wheel. They are lightweight, easy to install, and useful in the event of sudden snowfalls or short stretches of snow. However, they offer less performance than chains in heavy snow or severe ice.

Italian legislation: what the law provides

Italian law requires that, during certain periods and on certain stretches of road, drivers must be equipped with winter tires or have suitable anti-slip devices (approved chains or socks) on board.

Period of obligation

In most Italian regions the obligation is active from:

➡️ November 15th to April 15th

However, provinces, municipalities, and road operators may issue ordinances with different timeframes , especially in mountainous or high-altitude areas. The obligation is indicated by a blue sign with a tire and chains .

What is considered suitable by law

To drive during the mandatory period you must have one of these equipments :

  1. Winter tires (M+S or 3PMSF) fitted to the vehicle
  2. Approved snow chains compliant with the technical standards recognized in Italy
  3. Snow socks approved UNI EN 16662-1:2020

Snow chains: valid approvals

Chains must bear one of the following certifications:

  • UNI 11313 (Italian regulation)
  • ÖNORM V5117 or V5119 (European equivalents)
  • Other approvals recognized by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport

Without approval, they are not considered valid.

Snow socks: what has changed

Until a few years ago, snow socks were not recognized as a substitute for chains.
The situation has changed thanks to the implementation of the UNI EN 16662-1:2020 standard, which regulates non-metallic supplementary adhesion devices .

Today, as long as they are approved according to this standard , snow socks are legally equivalent to chains for the purposes of the obligation.

Sanctions

Anyone who drives without suitable equipment risks:

  • Fine from approximately 41 to over 300 euros , variable depending on the type of road
  • The obligation to stop and assemble the device
  • In the most serious cases, the ban on continuing the march

Comparison between chains and snow socks

Solution Advantages Disadvantages
Snow chains Maximum grip; effective on deep snow and ice; suitable for extreme conditions More complex assembly; bulky; not suitable for all vehicles
Snow socks Very easy to fit; lightweight; ideal for vehicles that cannot be fitted with snow chains Lower performance; fast wear; effective only if approved

How to choose the best option

1. Usual routes

  • Mountain roads and severe conditions: snow chains

  • City, short snowy stretches or occasional emergencies: socks

2. Vehicle compatibility

Some car models do not allow the use of snow chains due to space constraints in the wheel arches: in these cases, socks are the safest and often the only possible choice.

3. Frequency of use

  • Frequent use → chains
  • Rare use → socks (provided they are approved)

4. Budget

The socks are cheaper, but be careful: without approval they are not legally valid .

Snow chains and socks are both useful solutions, but they meet different needs. Chains ensure maximum performance in difficult conditions, while socks offer convenience and speed for occasional use.

Thanks to the UNI EN 16662-1:2020 regulation, approved socks can now effectively replace chains during periods and on sections where anti-slip devices are required.

Making informed choices allows you to travel safely, avoid fines, and face the winter without unexpected problems.
