Electric vehicle (EV) charging cables are essential for recharging the battery of an electric vehicle. Depending on the type of charging station (home, public, or rapid), there are different types of cables and connectors.

Types of Charging Cables for Electric Cars

Home Charging Cables (AC) :

These cables are designed to be used with a standard electrical outlet (such as 220V or 110V household outlets).

They are slower than fast charging, but are perfect for overnight charging or when the car is parked for a long time.

Connector : Generally, domestic cables use Type 2 (IEC 62196-2), which is the most common in Europe.

They can be equipped with a 10A, 13A or 16A cable , depending on the desired charging speed.

Fast Charging Cables (DC) :

Fast charging uses direct current (DC) , and is much faster than standard alternating current (AC) charging.

They are used in fast charging stations and are able to charge the car much faster.

Connector : The main connectors are the CCS (Combined Charging System) or CHAdeMO , depending on the vehicle model and manufacturer.

Charging Cables for Public Charging Stations (AC) :

Public charging stations typically also use the Type 2 connector (IEC 62196-2) for AC charging.

Some AC charging cables may also come with an adapter that allows you to connect cars of different makes and models.

Components of an Electric Car Charging Cable:

Power plug : The part of the cable that connects to the power outlet (household or charging station).

Charging cable : The wire that transmits electricity from the outlet to the vehicle. It is usually reinforced to withstand physical and environmental stress.

Vehicle Connector : The part of the cable that connects to the car, which varies depending on the connector type (Type 1, Type 2, CCS, CHAdeMO, etc.).

Communication unit : Some charging cables and stations have a digital communication function between the cable and the car to monitor the charging status and ensure safety during the process.
