Le marche di Roof racks

Roof bars are chosen based on the type of mounting point available on your car's roof: gutter, integrated rail, fixed points, or smooth roof. Each configuration requires a specific mounting kit, which determines compatibility with the bar and the accessories to be mounted on top.

How to choose roof bars for your car

Mounting type: the first criterion to check

The starting point is to understand how your car's roof is configured. The four most common variants are: gutter (protruding edge along the roof), integrated rail (longitudinal bars flush with the bodywork), fixed points (manufacturer-specific eyelets or mounting points), and smooth roof without visible anchor points. The mounting kit must exactly match this configuration: a flush rail kit will not work on a gutter, and vice versa.

Bar profile: square, round, or aerodynamic

Roof bars are available in three main sections. The square profile is the most compatible with bike racks, roof boxes, and other universal clamp accessories. The aerodynamic profile (teardrop or wingbar section) reduces wind noise at highway speeds. The in-rail profile slides inside the longitudinal rails and offers a more integrated appearance. Nordrive, Fabbri, and Thule offer all three types.

Bar length

The correct length depends on the width of the roof in the mounting area and the width of the accessories you intend to use. The most common sizes range from 108 cm to 135 cm. Bars that are too short do not allow you to correctly position bike racks or boxes; bars that are too long protrude and increase aerodynamic resistance. Always check the mounting kit instructions or the manufacturer's guided configuration.

Material: steel or aluminum

The steel bars have a lower cost and good sturdiness, but they weigh more. The aluminum bars are lighter, resist corrosion better, and are the preferred choice for frequent use or pairing with quality bike racks and boxes. Nordrive Silenzio, Fabbri Alu Viva, and the Thule WingBar lines are examples of aluminum bars with an aerodynamic profile.

Spare parts and mounting accessories

Over time, the mounting kits (feet, clamps, gaskets), the locks, and the end caps of the bars can wear out. Thule, Yakima, and Nordrive distribute original spare parts identified by code: locks, single SKS key, model-specific adapters. Before purchasing a spare part, write down the code of the mounting kit or the installed bar to avoid incompatibilities.

Domande frequenti
