Motorcycle batteries are divided into two main families: lead-based (AGM and conventional) and lithium. The first selection criterion is compatibility with the battery code listed in the owner's manual or on the original battery to be replaced; the second is the type of technology, which affects weight, maintenance, and cold-weather performance.

How to choose the right motorcycle battery

Replacing a motorcycle battery requires checking several precise specifications before purchasing. An incorrect code or a technology incompatible with the electrical system can cause starting problems or damage the onboard electronics.

Read the battery code

The code (for example, YTX12-BS, YTZ7V, YB7L-B) is printed on the original battery or listed in the vehicle manual. It contains information on size, capacity, and terminal polarity. This is the essential starting point: two batteries with different codes are not interchangeable, even if they look similar.

AGM or conventional lead batteries

Sealed lead batteries with AGM technology are now the standard on most modern motorcycles. They do not require topping up, withstand vibrations well, and are available in two versions: factory sealed (pre-activated at the factory and ready to use) and with acid included (to be activated before the first installation). Yuasa, Energy Safe, and Furukawa Battery cover most original applications with this technology.

LiFePO4 lithium batteries

Lithium batteries weigh significantly less than their lead equivalents and hold their charge for longer periods of inactivity. They are particularly suitable for sportbikes, naked bikes, and applications where weight savings are important. Skyrich is the leading brand in this segment with its HJTX, HJTZ, and HJT ranges. Note: some lithium batteries require a charger compatible with LiFePO4 chemistry; not all traditional battery maintainers are suitable.

Voltage, capacity, and dimensions

Almost all motorcycle batteries operate at 12V. The capacity in Ah and the cold cranking amps (CCA) must be equal to or higher than the original values. The physical dimensions are specified in the battery code itself: checking the height, width, and depth before purchase is essential, especially on motorcycles with a narrow battery compartment.

Maintenance and charging

AGM and lithium batteries do not require routine maintenance, but benefit from a battery maintainer during extended periods of inactivity, typically in winter. For lithium batteries, it is important to use a charger that explicitly supports the LiFePO4 charging profile. Chargers in the Tecmate Optimate range are among those available in our range that are compatible with both technologies.

Domande frequenti
