To get started, the first distinction is between fixed components to be installed and portable travel equipment.
How to choose a kitchen and refrigerator for a camper
The choice depends on three main variables: the type of use (fixed layout or touring camping), the available power source, and the space on board. Below are the practical criteria for each area.
Refrigerators: technology and power supply
Camper refrigerators are divided into two main families. Absorption refrigerators run on LPG gas, 12 V, and 230 V: they are quiet and suitable for long stays with a mains connection. Compressor refrigerators (such as Dometic, Indelb, Extracool, or Vitrifrigo models) operate on 12/24 V DC and cool more efficiently even at high outdoor temperatures. For off-grid travel, they are the most practical choice, paired with solar panels or leisure batteries. It is necessary to assess the capacity in liters compared to the available space and the number of people on board.
Fridge air grilles and ventilation
An absorption refrigerator needs a proper airflow to dissipate heat. Air grilles should be chosen based on the dimensions of the compartment (front measurement in mm) and the material: aluminum for the exterior, plastic for the internal grille. Camper fridge fans improve circulation when the natural airflow is insufficient, especially in summer or during stays in the sun.
Spare parts for refrigerator and cooktop
For spare parts, it is essential to know the exact model of the appliance. The most requested components are: electric igniters, burner kits for stoves (available in different diameters), knobs, door locks, and ignition units. Dometic covers most of the SMEV refrigerators and stoves installed in recent decades. Always check the original spare part code before purchasing.
Kitchens, stoves, and camping accessories
Camping gas stoves vary by the number of burners and the type of cylinder connection. Portable models such as Brunner models or cartridge stoves are useful as an additional cooktop or for outdoor use. Kitchen cabinets (e.g., Brunner range) integrate a worktop and space for the cylinder in folding structures. For cookware, the Brunner Academy and Pirate sets are among the most sought after: you need to assess the diameter (indicated in mm) and the number of pieces based on cooking needs.
Coolers and thermal containers
Coleman passive coolers (Xtreme, Convoy) are suitable for short trips or as support for the main refrigerator. Capacity is measured in liters or quarts; the duration of the ice depends on the insulation and the amount of ice used. They do not replace a compressor refrigerator for prolonged use.
