How to choose gas accessories and gas bottles for motorhomes
The gas system of a motorhome or caravan is composed of several elements that must be compatible with each other: gas bottle, pressure regulator, filter, pipes and fittings. Working on any one of these components requires checking that the rest of the system is adequate.
Type of gas and bottle connection
Gas bottles for motorhome use can contain propane, butane or a mixture of the two. The connection varies depending on the country of manufacture of the bottle: the Italian thread W 21.8 is the most common in Italy, but those traveling in Europe often encounter different connections. In this case, country-specific adapters (Spain, France, Germany, etc.) or multi-adapter sets such as those in the GOK Euro-Set series are required.
Pressure regulator: flow rate and outlet pressure
The regulator reduces the bottle pressure to the value required by the onboard appliances. The parameters to check are the outlet pressure (typically 30 mbar for most camping appliances) and the maximum flow rate in kg/h, which must cover the total consumption of the installed burners. Some regulators, such as those in the GOK Caramatic series, integrate automatic safety functions or a two-stage system for switching between two bottles.
LPG filters: why they are needed and when to replace them
LPG bottle filters retain impurities and moisture present in the gas, protecting regulators and burners. They are particularly recommended for systems with aluminum bottles or in the presence of gas with oily residues. Replacement should be carried out periodically following the filter manufacturer's instructions.
Leak detectors and safety
Gas detectors signal the presence of LPG or methane in the cabin before dangerous concentrations are reached. Some models have separate external sensors that can be placed near critical points. Combined CO/LPG detectors also fall into this category. GOK, Truma and other brands offer certified solutions for indoor use.
Smart scales and level monitoring
There is no reliable level indicator integrated into standard liquid gas bottles. Smart scales (such as iGasView or Mopeka Pro) measure the weight or level via a sensor and transmit the data via Bluetooth to the smartphone app, preventing you from running out during a trip. They are compatible with most cylindrical steel or aluminum bottles.
Gas pistons and bottle compartment accessories
Gas pistons and brackets are mechanical elements that facilitate the opening and support of the bottle compartment door or hatch. The choice depends on the weight of the panel and the required stroke: the technical data on the force and length of the piston are reported on the individual product data sheet.
