Ski and snowboard racks
Car ski racks are distinguished above all by the type of mounting: on roof bars, magnetic without drilling, on a tow hitch, on the spare wheel (4x4), or on the rear doors of a van. Once the mounting is defined, you choose the pair capacity and compatibility with alpine skis or snowboard boards. Leggi la guida

How to choose the right ski rack for your car
The market offers very different solutions: before looking at brand and price, it is necessary to clarify three fundamental variables: where the ski rack attaches, how many pieces of equipment it needs to carry, and whether it is for skis, snowboards, or both.
Mounting type: where you start
The most important filter is the attachment point to the vehicle.
- Roof bars: the most common solution. The ski rack attaches to the roof rack bars already installed on the roof and guarantees stability even at high speeds. Compatible with T-slot systems or the manufacturer's specific profile.
- Magnetic: attaches to the roof without bars, suitable for occasional use on vehicles with a smooth metal roof.
- Tow hitch: uses the car's rear hitch, useful when the roof is already occupied or you do not want to install bars.
- Spare tire (4x4): designed for off-road vehicles and SUVs equipped with an external rear spare tire.
- Van rear doors: solution dedicated to commercial vehicles such as Ducato, Jumper, and Boxer, with attachment to the hinges or door frames.
- Inside the roof box: some ski racks are installed inside an existing roof box, optimizing space and protecting the skis from the elements.
Capacity: how many pairs do you need
The available models cover a range from 1 to 8 pairs of skis. For family use by 3-4 people, 4-pair models are sufficient; larger groups or rental companies consider models with 6 pairs or more. Those who also transport snowboard boards must check that the model explicitly supports snowboards: not all ski racks are compatible with boards, which have different widths and shapes.
Material and construction
Aluminum models, such as the Fabbri Aluski line, offer a good ratio between weight and strength. Thule technical plastic models (SnowPack series) focus on a quick locking system with a key. Yakima with the FatCat offers lever tightening straps. The choice of material affects the weight added to the roof and the ease of attaching/detaching the skis.
Accessories and options
Many systems are expandable: risers, spacers, snowboard kits, or adapters for insertion into the roof box are often sold separately. Checking the compatibility of the option with the base model before purchase is a step not to be skipped.
Compatibility with existing bars and systems
Those who already have Thule or Nordrive bars must make sure that the chosen ski rack uses the same mounting standard (foot, clip, or adapter). Universal bar ski racks cover most of the most common profiles, but brand-specific ones guarantee a precise and certified fit.
