How to choose sockets, cables and electrical panels for motorhomes
A motorhome's electrical system operates on two separate circuits: the 12V direct current circuit, powered by the batteries, and the 230V alternating current circuit, which is active when the vehicle is connected to the external mains or an inverter. Choosing the right components means respecting the limits of each circuit and ensuring safe, durable connections.
Cable cross-section: how to calculate it
The conductor cross-section, expressed in mm², determines how much current can flow without overheating. Flexible FROR-type cables, frequently sought in 3x1.5 and 3x2.5 versions, are suitable for use inside the living area due to their resistance to vibrations. Always consider the length of the run: long cables require larger cross-sections to limit voltage drop. 50-metre reels are the most economical solution for complete installations.
CEE sockets and plugs for external connection
The 230V CEE socket is the standard for connecting to campsite charging posts. There are versions with an integrated safety lock that prevents accidental removal while live. Check that the external socket and extension cable are compatible in terms of rated current and number of poles.
Distribution panels and fuse boxes
The 12V distribution panel centralises the direct current circuits and allows you to control each appliance with its own dedicated fuse. Nordelettronica fuse boxes (NE series) perform similar functions, with integrated protection and load control. The choice depends on the number of circuits to manage and compatibility with the existing panel in the event of replacement.
CAN-BUS control units and specific systems
On the latest generation Fiat Ducato, adding accessories such as a motorcycle rack requires dedicated CAN-BUS control units (Edicar) to avoid disrupting communication between the vehicle's original units. In these cases, compatibility with the exact chassis series is crucial: always consult the manufacturer's instructions or application tables.
Fuses, protection devices and minor accessories
Fuses and fuse holders are chosen based on the rated current of the circuit to be protected, calibrating the value to the appliance rather than the cable. 12V extension cables with a cigarette lighter socket are useful for powering mobile devices without modifications to the fixed system.
