Everything needed for boat maintenance: polyurethane and silicone sealants, antifouling paints, primers, paints, gelcoats, technical tapes, and cleaning products. To get started, it is best to consider the type of work—sealing, hull protection, painting, or cleaning—and the surface being treated.

How to choose sealants, paints and cleaning products for marine use

Sealants: polyurethane or silicone?

Polyurethane sealants such as those in the Sikaflex range are suitable when structural adhesion is required, for example when installing portholes, rub rails and deck fittings. Silicones such as SikaSeal are used where strong adhesion is not required but flexibility and resistance to salt water are needed. Before applying any sealant, always check whether the surface requires a specific primer: Sika offers a range of primers formulated for different substrates such as glass, metal and gelcoat.

Antifouling: choose according to the type of boating

Antifouling paints are divided into ablative, controlled-release and hard-matrix types. Hard racing versions such as Hempel Hard Racing are suitable for fast boats that sail frequently. Silicone antifouling paints such as Hempel Silic One do not release biocides and require a dedicated tiecoat to adhere correctly. Veneziani and Boero complete the range with formulations for different hull types and sailing areas.

Primers and paints: prepare the surface before painting

The durability of any paint job depends on the correct preparation of the substrate. Metal primers and underwater surface primers should be chosen according to the material and the finishing product that will follow. Marlin Metal Primer and Hempel Conversion Primer are formulated for metal substrates. For outboard engines, spray paints matched to the manufacturer's original colour allow for precise touch-ups without colour differences.

Gelcoat and fillers: fiberglass hull repairs

Gelcoat restores the surface layer of a fiberglass hull after scratches or abrasions. Available in white and various colours, it requires good surface preparation and, in deeper cases, the prior application of a two-component epoxy filler. Yachticon offers ready-to-use gelcoat; the Boerostucco range covers filling and levelling requirements.

Technical tapes and cleaning products

PSP Marine Tapes (Mylar, self-fusing silicone, Stayput for spinnakers) meet very different needs: sail repairs, surface protection and masking for painting. For cleaning, Shurhold offers brushes and paintbrushes with graded bristles for delicate surfaces; Star Brite and Yachticon cover detergents, degreasers and teak care products.

Domande frequenti
