How to choose suspension, movers and leveling accessories for motorhomes
The components in this section are used at three different stages of a motorhome's life: during driving (suspension), when leveling (blocks and leveling legs), and when moving without a tractor unit (mover). Understanding which area you want to address is the starting point.
Air suspension: chassis compatibility
Air suspension for motorhomes is installed in addition to or in replacement of the original springs and allows you to adjust the pressure based on the load. The most sought-after kits are for the Fiat Ducato across different generations and other derived chassis such as the Opel Movano. Before choosing a kit, you need to know the vehicle's year of manufacture and the chassis code, as the mounting systems and air spring dimensions vary. Brands available: AL-KO (with the Air-Top range), Tecnocaravan, ExtraTOP and Drive-Rite kits.
Compressors and control units for air suspension
Air suspension requires a compressor to manage the pressure. Kits may include a compressor, fittings and a pressure gauge, or they may be sold separately. Some solutions feature a control unit under the seat for a neat installation. Check the supply voltage and the mounting position specified by the kit you choose.
Movers: electric movement on the campsite
A mover is a motorized roller system that allows you to move the motorhome in tight spaces using a remote control, without having to tow it with a vehicle. Models vary in load capacity, drive type (manual or automatic) and compatibility with axle width. The most sought-after include systems from the Quattro Titanium range and Reich movers; Truma is the brand with the most references in this section. Before purchasing, check the motorhome's fully loaded weight and chassis width.
Leveling blocks and leveling legs
Blocks are used to compensate for ground slopes when parked; leveling legs stabilize the motorhome once positioned. Blocks are chosen based on the maximum compensation height and material (reinforced plastic or rubber). Fiamma offers kits such as the Level Up Jumbo with a bag, while Thule offers blocks with a tool bag included. For leveling legs, the choice depends on the type of chassis attachment and the load to be supported.
Anti-theft devices and spare parts for AL-KO systems
Anyone who owns a trailer or caravan with an AL-KO coupling (AKS 1300, AKS 3004 and similar) can find compatible anti-theft devices and specific spare parts such as axle nut and individual replacement springs. For spare parts, it is essential to know the code of the original coupling or suspension system.
