Maintenance Tips for LPG Cars
LPG cars are a popular choice among motorists because it is a fuel system that allows you to save on fuel while still maintaining good performance.
It is important to remember that some precautions are required to make the system work at its best and keep it efficient.
LPG vehicles require regular maintenance, both ordinary and extraordinary , as required by law. This includes regular service and inspections, which all vehicles are subject to.
Ordinary maintenance of the system
Routine maintenance of the LPG fuel system includes servicing: the deadlines written in the car's maintenance booklet must be followed and respected, approximately every 15,000/20,000 kilometers.
Compared to a petrol or diesel car, the cost varies and can be a little higher due to some interventions dedicated exclusively to LPG, such as:
- checking for any leaks
- the replacement of some filters
- engine valve control.
In addition to the service, you should also remember the periodic inspection , but in this case the timing is the same as for other cars. However, there are additional tests that involve higher costs, including checks on all parts of the gas system.
However, the deadlines for vehicle inspections remain unchanged. The same rules apply for diesel and gasoline vehicles: inspections must be performed four years after initial registration and every two years thereafter.
Extraordinary maintenance of LPG vehicles
An extraordinary maintenance service for LPG cars is the mandatory replacement of the tank every 10 years, which is required by law .
The period is calculated from the date of registration if the system was fitted as standard; from the testing date for aftermarket systems.
The cost of replacing the cylinder depends on the following factors:
- vehicle model
- labor rates
- tank model
- region where the intervention is carried out
In general, however, we can consider a cost starting from €500.
By law, the replacement of the tank is required , not the inspection.
During the inspection, the cylinders are checked but do not always need to be replaced. Furthermore, due to its design, the LPG system is equipped with solenoid valves that ensure vehicles are safe even in the event of an accident or fire .
