Motorcycle Transmission Crowns

Chainrings are a key component of a motorcycle's chain drive system. Together with the sprocket and chain , they determine performance, top speed, and acceleration .

⚙️ What is the Crown in the Motorcycle Transmission?

The chainring is the rear sprocket mounted on the wheel hub. It receives motion from the sprocket (connected to the motor) via the chain , transmitting power to the rear wheel.

📐 How does crown selection work?

The number of teeth on the chainring influences the behavior of the motorcycle:

Type of modification Result
➕ More teeth ✔️ More acceleration ❌ Lower top speed
➖ Fewer teeth ✔️ More final speed ❌ Less acceleration

⚠️ When changing the chainring, always consider the pinion as well, to maintain a correct transmission ratio.

🛠️ Types of Crowns

  1. Steel
✔️ Very durable, perfect for road and urban use
    ❌ Heavier

  2. Aluminum (Ergal)
    ✔️ Lightweight, ideal for racing
❌ Less durable, wears out sooner

  3. Bimetallic (Steel + Ergal)
✔️ The best: a mix of durability and lightness
    ❌ More expensive

📋 How to choose the right crown?

To purchase the compatible one you need:

  • Make and model of the motorcycle

  • Year

  • Transmission type (typical: 520, 525, 530)

  • Number of original teeth (e.g. 42, 44…)

You can also buy a complete transmission kit : crown + sprocket + chain, already optimised for each other.
