Bridges and U-bolts

Let's talk about bridges and U-bolts , two essential nautical accessories for fixing, locking and anchoring on board, used both on deck and below deck.

🔩 NAUTICAL BRIDGES

Bridges are small metal supports shaped like an inverted "U" that are attached to the bridge or other surfaces.
They are used for:

• Block and guide tops

• Attach lightweight accessories (awnings, bungee cords, fenders)

• Anchor points for elastic bands or cords

• Sometimes also used to lock doors or curtains

✅ Features:

• Fixing with 2 through or self-tapping screws

• Some models have a flat or shaped base for curved surfaces

• Available in AISI 316 stainless steel , reinforced plastic, chromed brass

📏 Common dimensions:

• Width: 20 to 50 mm

• Hole spacing: from 15 to 40 mm

• Height: 10 to 25 mm

⛓️ NAUTICAL U-BOLTS

U- bolts (also known as U-bolts or U-clamps ) are “U”-shaped brackets with threads at the ends.
They are used for:

• Structural fixings (e.g. bollards, eyebolts, turnbuckles, pulpits)

• Very robust through anchors

• Heavy duty supports (engines, roll bars, antennas)

• They can be used with internal reinforcement plates

✅ Types:

• Simple U-bolts → only bracket and nuts

• With reinforcement plate → distributes the load better

• Rubberized or PVC coated → to avoid abrasion on pipes and lines

• Round or flat base U-bolts , also inclined for curved surfaces

🛠️ Materials:

• AISI 316 stainless steel (marine use, corrosion resistant)

• Galvanized → less expensive but not suitable for long-term use in salt water

📦 Practical differences

✅ Practical advice:

• Bridges : also excellent for securing sheets on deck or for blocking tarpaulins .

• U-bolts : always use a counter plate when mounting on fiberglass or wood to avoid deformations.
